New routines & she likes them !!

So it's taking some time for Chanel to come out of her shell. Given her history, I get it. 

She's learning she doesn't like being in a crate at night, but she's not quite down to snuggle yet. She's not potty trained, but she can hold and go given regular interval training. 

So, we ripped the bandaid off!

She sleeps in the bed with us now. There is a wall and a rail to give her some borders and she feels safe snuggled in her own corner. She will step all over the bed and us with no fear. We've done this since Sunday and last night she even laid down while we were playing a card game and fell asleep within a foot of us!!!

We've gone ahead and bought cute denim diaper skirts. So she can be stylish and also have a barrier to see if she'll not pee and be uncomfortable and wait for the next interval she can go outside. 

So far, it's been successful. 

We are loving our next phase, and this forces more one on one and intimate interaction so she can continue building trust. She has no complaints and we have less to clean up. We never complain about one more puppy to snuggle with at night.

Week 2: She is learning pets feel nice

Even though it seems like slow progress, it's huge, really.  By day 2 she felt comfortable laying down and resting her head. This is so good because she doesn't feel the need to pace and shake and constantly survey a hostile environment. After a few days, she was already walking up to us to sniff our ankles if she thought we "couldn't see her".  When I get her in a corner, we can reach out and pet her without her freaking out like a jumping spider. She'll let me pet her chest, move up to her neck and she doesn't shake.   I have been able to clean gunk from her under eye without much teeth gritting. I was able to check her nails to see if they needed trimming. While we work on potty training, I was able to pick her up and wash her paws and wipe down her chest. Her tummy is still a sensitive area, not because there is pain, but it's a VERY vulnerable area for a fearful dog. By the end of being handled, I was able to give her a kiss on the forehead 3 time...

Ready for Spring

 It's been a weird winter and Chanel was shaggy for it to stay warm. This weekend, we decided to get a trim to ready for the hopefully warmer spring weather.  She has fully grown into her voice, her curiosities, her preferences. It's amazing how when a pup feels safe, they can be a pup again.  Her quirks are funny, she's a digger, not sure if it's a yorkie thing, or HER thing. She will randomly dig at our floors. She has started playing with our pup now and it's fun to watch. She knows where she is comfortable on multiple doggy beds in the house.  She will go chasing after me in the yard when I'm picking up poo messes. She's much more interactive than when we first met her.

She howls!!??

 This is why I love fostering. No matter what I think I know about a breed, I always learn that personality beats anything. She howls!!  She doesn't like when someone leaves the house. She paces looking for whomever is missing, she starts with a low growl whine to straight howl. It's darling, and slightly comical.
